Early years

Nils Boe studied law at the University of Wisconsin . After graduating and admitted to the bar, he practiced in Sioux Falls. During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the US Navy . After the war he worked as a lawyer again. Between 1950 and 1958 Boe was an MP in the South Dakota House of Representatives . At times he acted as its speaker . Between 1963 and 1965 he was lieutenant governor of his state; in 1964 he was then elected as the candidate of the Republican Party for the new governor, where he prevailed with 52:48 percent of the vote against the Democrat John F. Lindley.

South Dakota Governor

Boe's term of office began on January 5, 1965. After a re-election in 1966, he could serve until January 7, 1969. Like his predecessor Archie M. Gubbrud, he also campaigned for educational policy. School television was also introduced at that time. A new pension law was introduced for civil servants. Anti-discrimination laws have also been passed to protect women in particular. The governor also saw to it that wages were equalized between the sexes. Another concern of Boe's was to try to attract industry from outside his state to South Dakota and attract investment there. In 1966, the state's first nuclear power plant went online. The plant, which was built near Sioux Falls, was converted into a conventional power plant a year later due to technical problems. The hydropower plants on the Missouri were also completed during Boe's tenure . This program had been in the works since the 1940s.

He held this office between 1969 and 1971. Boe was then appointed as a judge at the United States Customs Court in New York City , where he succeeded Samuel Murray Rosenstein . At the same time he took over the presidency of this federal court from Paul Peter Rao . He kept this post - even after the court was rededicated to the United States Court of International Trade - until 1984; then he withdrew into his private life. Nils Boe died of cancer in 1992.
