Robert S. Vessey

Robert Scadden Vessey (born May 16, 1858 in Winnebago County , Wisconsin , †  October 18, 1929 in Pasadena , California ) was an American politician and from 1909 to 1913 the seventh governor of the state of South Dakota .

Early years and political advancement

Robert Vessey attended the public schools of his home in Wisconsin and then the Daggett Commercial School in Oshkosh . He then worked as a lumberjack in northern Wisconsin for five years. After moving to South Dakota, he was President of Wessington Springs State Bank from 1899 to 1908 . Vessey served in the South Dakota Senate between 1905 and 1907 . In 1908 he was elected as the Republican Party candidate for the new governor of South Dakota.

South Dakota Governor

Vessey took up his new office on January 5, 1909. After a re-election in 1910, he was able to exercise it until January 7, 1913. During those four years, South Dakota has revised its banking and insurance laws. The railway system was also newly regulated. In keeping with the national trend of those years, Vessey also pursued progressive politics. In 1910 the new State Capitol in the capital Pierre was completed. This structure is still used today by the government of South Dakota, with some extensions in the meantime. With the completion of the Capitol, all discussions about relocating the capital finally ended.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Vessey retired into private life. He was still involved in banking. At the same time, he also dealt with sheep breeding and was a co-owner of a general store. Ex-Governor Vessey died in 1929. He was married to Florence Albert, with whom he had four children.
