The church of St. Johannis in Halle (Westphalia) , built in Gothic , Late Gothic and Neo-Gothic styles, is located in the center of the village in the so-called Haller Herz. It is home to the city's Evangelical Lutheran parish.

It is first mentioned on May 9, 1246 in an exchange document. The background to the notarized exchange of the churches in Halle and Rheda was that Bishop Engelbert von Osnabrück wanted to prevent an illegal appropriation of the church in Rheda by the Bishop of Paderborn . He gave the Iburg monastery to acquire ownership of the church in Rheda with all the rights and income associated with it, the "tor Halle" located on the southern edge of his diocese with all rights and accessories.

After the Reformation in Halle took place between 1540 and 1595 through the establishment of the rule of the County of Ravensberg , the church was used by the Protestant community. Until the completion of the Sacred Heart Church in Halle in 1907, only the church in Stockkämpen was available to the remaining citizens of the Catholic faith .

Building history

  • Around the mid-13th century, the emergence of be Tower , the two jochigen means ship and the presbytery dated.
  • Around 1450 the church was extended to a two-aisled hall church with a three- bay extension.
  • In 1886 the north aisle was added.
  • Extensive restorations were carried out in 1961/62 and 1991/92, one of the aims of which was to bring the Gothic architecture back to life.

An inspection of the tower and the associated inspection of the vaulted ceiling from above is possible by appointment.

Equipment (selection)

altar

altar

Four crosses in the sandstone plate indicate that the altar is dedicated to a relic . This shows that the altar was created before the Reformation and is therefore at least around 400 years old. In 1961/62 the bronze crucifix was added, created by Ursula Querner from Hamburg.

Altarpiece
Altarpiece

The picture "Christ with his hands outstretched" kept in the tower was part of the altar in the choir until the restoration in 1961/62 and was then moved to the tower. In the meantime it is to the right of the entrance to the church. The picture dates from the middle of the 19th century and is painted in the style of the Nazarenes .

Remnants of the balustrade

balustrade

On the gallery to the left of the altar remains of the balustrade from 1661 have been preserved and integrated into the railing. They suggest a once rich ornamentation .

pulpit

pulpit

On the pulpit, made of sandstone in 1716, at an angle to the left of the altar, figures of the four evangelists with their symbols are arranged around the figure of Christ:

  • Matthew with symbol "man" (the figure was stolen years ago)
  • Mark with the symbol "lion"
  • Luke with the symbol "bull"
  • John with the "eagle" symbol

The pulpit was changed both during the construction work in 1886 and during the restorations in 1961/62.

Sacrament niche

Sacrament niche

The sacrament niche behind the altar has been preserved from before the Reformation. The bronze door with an applied stylized cross was also created by Ursula Querner and erected in 1961/62. The depiction of the risen Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus breaking bread together should indicate the earlier use of the cupboard.

Baptismal font

The baptismal font to the right of the altar was also set up after the restoration in 1961/62. It is based on a design by Karl Ehlers from Detmold . Its shape and processing have a Trinitarian impression.

Easter candlesticks

Easter candlesticks

The candlestick is a gift of thanks for wonderful preservation in the event of a serious accident. It bears the initials of the children saved in this accident and was erected in 1992. The lamp shaft is made of bronze. It depicts the resurrection of Christ, the meeting of Emmaus and the ascension of Christ.

window

From the original glazing, only the panes of the three-lane window on the eastern end wall of the south aisle have been preserved. The remaining windows were redesigned in 1961/1962. The three-part choir window with references to Christmas, Passion, Easter and Pentecost was designed by Vinzenz Pieper from Angelmodde near Münster .

organ

After the north aisle had been added, a new organ was installed by Ernst Klassmeier in 1886 .

After the restoration carried out in 1961/1962, Detlef Kleuker built a new organ that had 28 stops on 2  manuals and a pedal . Arno Schönstedt and Burghard Schloemann , who had been cantor of the church since 1961, contributed to the conception .

This organ was replaced again as part of the church restoration carried out in 1991/92: The organ building company Heintz from Schiltach built a new instrument based on a design by church music director Burkhart Goethe ( organ builder and cantor ) from Schwäbisch Hall . The organ is built in the Alsatian style after Andreas Silbermann . Its 34 registers, which are distributed over 3 manuals and pedal, include 2198 pipes , these are on slide chests with mechanical action .

Christ in the mandorla

Vault and wall paintings

The paintings are only preserved in remnants and are difficult to recognize. Also the representation of the "Christ in the Mandorla " (mandorla = almond-shaped halo) located in a prominent place in the vault of the choir is incomplete and not very detailed, since only the symbols of the evangelists Mark as a winged lion and Luke as a bull can be made out.

Archive photos

In the tower, archive photos show the interior of the church before the restoration work in 1961/62.

Big bell

Bells

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the church had three bronze bells. Two of them were drafted for armaments purposes during the First World War . The so-called civil bell from 1682, which was cast by M. Joh. Fricke, has been preserved to this day. Your strike tone is the a 1 .

In 1921, the Bochum Association cast three cast steel bells with the chimes h 0 , d 1 and e 1 (named after the New Testament triad Faith, Love, Hope), so that the church today has four bells.

Churchyard

The churchyard surrounding the church was a cemetery from the 13th century until April 15, 1828. No funerals have been held here since then, and the churchyard has gradually been transformed into a church square. Its current appearance with many single linden trees was created in 1974.
