St. John

The Evangelical Church of St. Johannes in Halle (Saale) is located in the south of the city and is part of the Lutherplatz district , which was built on with cooperative residential buildings from 1910. The church building was built in 1892/1893 according to plans by Friedrich Fahro .

Location and history

The church dominates the oval Johannesplatz in front of it . The edge of the square, following the oval shape, was framed with a closed three- to four-story residential development.

Apparently the church was not damaged in World War II , because the website of the community does not contain any information. On the other hand, the choir windows, which were added during the initial construction period, were destroyed by up to 70 percent in the 1970s by vandalism . Since the churches were only subsidized selectively in the GDR era and the Johanneskirche did not have a monument status, it was given up for worship in 1977 and used as a warehouse. After the fall of the Wall , the city's Christians took care of the reuse of their church. So the building shell could be renovated by 2010, but especially the windows with the biblical motifs were restored.

Building

The church is a three-aisled hall church with red brick masonry. The aisles are very narrow in relation to the main nave. A ribbed vault over a three-sided gallery closes off the 16 meter high room. The base of the main nave is 22 m × 15 m. The middle gallery area is the location of the organ . A west tower and a choir , the floor plan of which follows five eighths of an octagon, characterize the appearance of the house. The tower on a square floor plan is 61 m high and has a slim octagonal helmet.

Furnishing

The choir receives its daylight through colorful two-lane, five-field lead glass windows with large tracery - oculi . The representations of the four evangelists in their symbolic forms ( Matthew as a human / angel, Markus as a lion, Luke as a bull and the church patron Johannes as an eagle) were made in the Hanover Art Institute for Glass Painting Freystadtl . The middle window shows the outpouring of the Holy Spirit , in the rose arranged above the enthroned Christ with the Bible can be seen. The windows and the rosette are grouped together in a round arch shape with hinted brick bands and form altar niches. The completely reconstructed baptismal font has stood next to the choir room since April 2009 and has already been used again accordingly. The reconstruction and addition of missing parts was carried out by the company from Teutschenthal, made possible by private donations.
