Harvey L. Wollman

Harvey L. Wollman (born May 14, 1935 in Frankfort , Spink County , South Dakota ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was the 26th governor of the state of South Dakota from 1978 to 1979 ; since then, all Republicans have held this post.

Early years

Harvey Wollman attended Doland High School , Bethel College in Minnesota, and until 1957 Huron College . Between 1958 and 1960 he was a soldier in the US Army . Between 1961 and 1965 he was a teacher at his old school, Doland High School , and also attended the University of South Dakota . Then he became a farmer.

Political career

Wollman served in the South Dakota Senate between 1969 and 1974 . There he was temporarily leader of the Democrats. In 1974 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state. With this election, the terms of office of the governor and the lieutenant governor were extended from two to four years.

After the incumbent governor Richard F. Kneip resigned from his office on July 24, 1978 to become US ambassador to Singapore , Wollman had to end his current term of office. In the gubernatorial elections of that year, however, he failed in the primaries, so that his term of office ended on January 1, 1979. As governor, he increased the budget for education policy and campaigned for the abolition of property taxes.

Personal

Harvey Wollman is married to Ann Geigel, with whom he has two sons. His older brother Roger was at the time of Harvey's inauguration as governor chief justice at the South Dakota Supreme Court and took this oath from; later he became a federal judge .
