George H. Hoffman

George Harrison Hoffman (born January 21, 1838 in Adams County , Pennsylvania , †  August 31, 1922 in South Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota.

Career

In 1844, George Hoffman came to DeKalb County in Indiana with his parents . There the father worked as a teacher and farmer. George attended the public schools in his respective homeland. He then completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. He also worked in agriculture. Between 1863 and 1865, during the Civil War, he was a soldier in an Indiana infantry unit that was part of the Union Army . He then returned to farming in Indiana in 1884. That year he moved to the Dakota Territory , where he ran a ranch in Walworth County . Among other things, he raised Hereford cattle .

Politically, Hoffman joined the Republican Party . After South Dakota's accession to the Union in 1889, he was elected to the local state senate . In 1890 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state alongside Arthur C. Mellette . He held this office between 1891 and 1893. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Among other things, he campaigned for issues in the area of ​​educational policy and was a member of several educational committees at local and state level. Hoffman was a member of various organizations and associations, including the Grand Army of the Republic veterans association . He died on August 31, 1922.
