Edward Lincoln Abel

Edward Lincoln Abel (born November 17, 1860 in Springfield , Illinois , †  December 5, 1926 in Long Beach , California ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1915 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota .

Career

Edward Abel studied law and later worked, among other things, as a lawyer. He came to South Dakota at an unknown time. He practiced as a lawyer in the local town of Bridgewater . He also worked in agriculture as a farmer and rancher and in the banking industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In his hometown of Bridgewater, he served as the town's legal advisor, councilor and eventually mayor. For many years he headed the school committee there. Between 1904 and 1906 he sat for the McCook County in the Senate of South Dakota . In 1905 he moved his residence and law firm to the city of Huron . There, too, he became a member of the local education committee. In 1907 he became President of the City National Bank .

In 1912 Abel was elected lieutenant governor of South Dakota by an overwhelming majority alongside Frank M. Byrne . He held this office between 1913 and 1915. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. He died on December 5, 1926 in Long Beach, where he was also buried.
