L. Roy Houck

L. Roy Houck (born January 28, 1905November 22, 1992 ) was an American politician . Between 1955 and 1959 he was lieutenant governor of the state of South Dakota .

Career

Nothing is known about Roy Houck's youth and schooling. He later worked as a rancher and rancher. In 1959, he had to give up most of his ranch because the land was flooded by a dam. Instead, he set up the UUU Ranch where he raised buffalo . The company developed into the largest buffalo ranch in the world. Large parts of the film Dances with Wolves , among other things , were shot on its premises . He was also the founder of the National Buffalo Association .

Politically, Houck was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1949 and 1954 he was a member of the South Dakota Senate . In 1954 he was elected lieutenant governor of South Dakota alongside Joe Foss . He held this office between 1955 and 1959. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he devoted himself to his buffalo ranch. Roy Houck died on November 22, 1992.
