St. Bartholomew in Stressenhausen

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Bartholomew in Stressenhausen , a district of the Straufhain community in the Hildburghausen district ( Thuringia ), is a typical choir tower church that dates from the Romanesque - Gothic period. The nave of the listed building was built in 1719/20.

Building history

The church tower has narrow, rectangular openings on the first floor; on the second floor there are still arched windows on the central pillars on the east and south sides. The upper end of the church tower with a slated, octagonal storey and arched windows as well as a curved dome was built in the 18th century. The chancel in the base of the tower has a square floor plan with an edge length of five meters. It is spanned by a vault with grooved ribs with a keystone and a rosette. The sacristy on the north side has a ribless cross vault .

The current nave, 14 meters long and almost nine meters wide, was built in 1719/20 and is separated from the choir by a triumphal arch. Its facade is characterized on the long sides by three large rectangular windows, between which oval windows are arranged at the top. The entrance portal, framed by two Doric columns, is on the gable side. Above it there is a building inscription as well as two oval and one rectangular windows. The interior of the church is characterized by two-story galleries on the north and south sides and a single -story gallery on the west side with the organ . This was built by Heinrich Salomo Henne from Hildburghausen around 1800.

The stone pulpit on a central column on the southern pillar of the triumphal arch is dated to the 17th century. Round arches and circular arch friezes decorate them. The sound cover has angel heads at the corners and evangelist figures as well as the figure of Christ in the radiant sun on the six sides of the octagon. The banister is decorated with carved ornaments, flower hangings between the fillings, and in the middle a small carved angel figure.
