Dennis Daugaard
Dennis M. Daugaard (born June 11, 1953 in Garretson , Minnehaha County , South Dakota ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was governor of the state of South Dakota from January 8, 2011 to January 5, 2019 .
Life
Career
Dennis Daugaard's paternal grandparents emigrated from Denmark to the United States in 1911 and soon afterwards ran a farm at Dell Rapids , which Raymond Daugaard, Dennis' father, also ran. Dennis Daugaard also has two sisters.
After attending a so-called dwarf school, he graduated from high school in Dell Rapids in 1971 . He then moved to the University of South Dakota at Vermillion , where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1975 . Following this, he moved to Chicago ( Illinois ), where he in 1978 at the Northwestern University his Juris Doctor in Law gained.
In 1981 he returned to South Dakota, where he married Linda Schmidt that same year. The couple had three children, two daughters and a son.
Political career
In 1996 Daugaard was elected to the South Dakota Senate; Both 1998 and 2000 were re-elected with a large majority. In 2002, Mike Rounds , the newly elected governor of South Dakota, made him lieutenant governor of his home state. After Rounds' re-election in 2006, Daugaard was again lieutenant governor.
After Rounds was not allowed to run again in 2010 after two terms due to the constitution, Daugaard himself applied for the office of governor of South Dakota. In the election at the beginning of November 2010, he was able to prevail with around 62 percent of the vote against the Democrat Scott Heidepriem , whereupon he became Rounds' successor in January 2011. Its lieutenant governor is Matt Michels . On November 4, 2014, he was elected for a second term. On January 5, 2019, his successor Kristi Noem was sworn in and Daugaard left his office.

Dennis Daugaard's parents were both deaf . Therefore, he not only masters American Sign Language , but is also a qualified interpreter for this sign language.
