Vermillion is a city in Clay County in the southeast of the US state South Dakota in the United States with 10,571 inhabitants ( as of 2010) . Vermillion is the county seat of Clay County and sits on the bluff of the Missouri River . The city is home to the University of South Dakota , the second largest university in South Dakota.
history
The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the night on August 24, 1804 in what is now Vermillion, which John James Audubon visited in May 1843 to study the birds there. The city was founded in 1859 and received local self-government in 1873. Three quarters of Vermillion was inundated by Missouri floods in 1881.
Demographics
After the census of 2000, there 9,765 people in 3647 households and 1801 families lived. The population density was 984.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial population was 90.95% White, 1.29% African American, 3.37% Native American, 2.46% Asian, 0.38% other ethnic and 1.56% mixed race . Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.07% of the population.
Of the 3,647 households, 25.8% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 38.5% were married couples living together, 9.2% were a single mother, and 50.6% were non-families. 34.1% were made up of single households, and 7.8% had people aged 65 years or older living alone. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.90.
In relation to the entire town, the population consisted of 17.5% residents under 18 years, 36.2% between 18 and 24 years, 24.5% between 25 and 44 years, 13.4% between 45 and 64 years 8.4% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 24 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 89.9 men.
The median income for a household in the 24,095 USD , and the median income for a family was 40,109 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,180 versus $ 20,975 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,909. 16.2% of families and 26.2% of the population are below the poverty line (including 19.0% of children and 14.8% of those over 65).
90.7% of those over 25 have a high school education , 45.4% have at least a bachelor's degree and 21.2% have a diploma.
