Archie M. Gubbrud (born December 31, 1910 in Lincoln County , South Dakota , †  April 26, 1987 in Sioux Falls , South Dakota) was an American politician and from 1961 to 1965 the 22nd governor of the state of South Dakota.

Early years

Archie Gubbrud attended the Augustana Academy in Canton until 1929 . Then he worked as a farmer. Between 1934 and 1950 he was employed by the municipality of Norway . At the same time he was from 1946 to 1951 on the Alcester school board . Between 1949 and 1969 he served as director of the State Bank of Alcester . Between 1950 and 1960, Gubbrud was a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives . In 1957, he succeeded Nils Boe as Speaker of Parliament . In 1960, he was elected as the new governor of South Dakota as the Republican Party candidate against Democratic incumbent Ralph Herseth .

South Dakota Governor

Gubbrud took up his new office on January 3, 1961. After a re-election in 1962 (again against Herseth) he was able to serve as governor for a total of four years. During this time he campaigned for a better education policy by increasing the corresponding budget. It was then that construction of the Custer State Hospital began. The Department of Labor was also created. In 1962, the power plant at the Oahe Dam on the Missouri went into operation and supplied much of the state with electricity. The 100th anniversary of the founding of the Dakota Territory also fell during Gubbrud's tenure .

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Gubbrud returned to his private interests. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1964 and 1968. Also in 1968, he unsuccessfully applied for a seat in the US House of Representatives . In 1969, President Richard Nixon appointed him head of the Farmers Home Administration , a federal agency that looked after farmers. Gubbrud held this office until 1977. Then he withdrew into private life. He died of lung cancer in 1987. Archie Gubbrod was married to Florence Dexter, with whom he had three children.
