Joseph-Aurèle Plourde

Joseph-Aurèle Plourde OC (born January 12, 1915 in Saint-François-de-Madawaska , New Brunswick , Canada , † January 5, 2013 ) was Archbishop of Ottawa .

Life

Joseph-Aurèle Plourde studied philosophy and theology at St. Joseph College, Memramcook, New Brunswick, and Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax , Nova Scotia . On May 7, 1944, he was awarded by Bishop Rosario Brodeur in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Edmundston , the sacrament of Holy Orders . Plourde was Professor of Social Sciences and Philosophy at Saint-Louis College in Edmundston.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 30, 1964 titular bishop of Lapda and auxiliary bishop in the Canadian diocese of Alexandria in Ontario . The episcopal ordination donated to him on August 26th of the same year the then Apostolic Delegate and later Cardinal Sergio Pignedoli ; Co- consecrators were Rosario Brodeur, Bishop of Alexandria in Ontario, and Joseph-Roméo Gagnon , Bishop of Edmundston . He was the council father of the last session of the Second Vatican Council .

On January 2, 1967, he was appointed Archbishop of Ottawa. The inauguration took place on February 26th of the same year. From 1969 to 1971 he was President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB).

Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation on September 27, 1989.

He was honored with the Order of Canada in 1989 . Plourde was a member of the Order of Malta and the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
