Marie-Joseph Lemieux

Marie-Joseph Lemieux OP (born May 10, 1902 in Québec , Canada ; † March 4, 1994 ) was a Canadian Archbishop and Apostolic Nuncio of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Marie-Joseph Lemieux entered the Dominican Order and took her perpetual vows on August 4, 1924 . He studied in Rome , Lille and Oxford and was ordained a religious priest on April 15, 1928 in Ottawa by Felix-Raymond-Marie Cardinal Rouleau OP . He completed his first mission in Japan .

Youngest bishop

With his appointment as Bishop of Hakodate , later the Diocese of Sendai (Japan), on December 9, 1935, he went down in history as the youngest bishop of the Roman Catholic Church at the time. On June 29, 1936, the Apostolic Delegate in Japan, Archbishop Paolo Marella , donated him episcopal ordination . Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Tokyo , Jean-Baptiste-Alix Chambon MEP , and the Bishop of Nagasaki , Januarius Kyūnosuke Hayasaka . In 1941 he had to leave Japan for political reasons, he returned to Canada on January 16, 1941 and was appointed titular bishop of Calydon as Bishop in exile of Sendai . On November 26, 1942, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Gravelbourg , Saskatchewan . Pope Pius XII appointed him on April 15, 1944 Bishop of Gravelbourg and on May 28, 1944 he took office.

Archbishop and Nuncio

On July 20, 1953, he was appointed Archbishop and Metropolitan of Ottawa , and on September 17, 1953, he was solemnly inducted into his new office. On September 16, 1966, Pope Paul VI appointed him . as titular archbishop pro hac vice of Saldae and apostolic nuncio in Haiti . From 1968 to 1969 he was also an Apostolic Delegate to the Antilles . On May 30, 1969, he became Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in India. He retired on February 16, 1971.

Act

Archbishop Lemieux was a participant in all sessions of the Second Vatican Council and was consultor in the "Preparatory Commission for the Bishops and the Dioceses". He consecrated Paul-Émile Charbonneau , Joseph Raymond Windle (titular bishop of Uzita ) and René Audet as bishops, as well as Edgerton Roland Clarke and Gordon Anthony Pantin CSSp as archbishops. At the episcopal ordination of Peter Tatsuo Cardinal Doi and Aimé Décosse (Bishop of Gravelbourg) he assisted as co-consecrator. His motto was: "IN CARITATE CHRISTI".
