Januarius Kyūnosuke Hayasaka ( Japanese ヤ ヌ ア リ オ 早 坂 久 之 助 , Yanuario Hayasaka Kyūnosuke ; born September 17, 1883 in Sendai , Japan ; † October 26, 1959 ) was the first Japanese bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Japan .

Life

Januarius Kyūnosuke Hayasaka was ordained a priest on June 10, 1917 . On July 16, 1927, he was appointed Bishop of Nagasaki . Bishop Hayasaka was the first Japanese diocesan bishop to be appointed and consecrated. Previously, the Paris Mission and other religious orders provided the vast majority of the Japanese ordinaries . On July 16, 1927, after the organizational restructuring of the Catholic Church in Japan, the independent Japanese church administration took place .

Pope Pius XI (1922-1939) initiated him on 30 October 1927 the first Bishop of Nagasaki, co-consecrators were the Archbishop and General Superior of the Paris Mission Jean-Baptiste-Marie de Bude Guébriant and the Archbishop of Tokyo Jean-Baptiste-Alix Chambon MEP . Bishop Hayasaka consecrated Johannes Peter Franziskus Ross SJ , Vicar Apostolic of Hiroshima , as titular bishop of Tabala and was co - consecrator of Marie-Joseph Lemieux OP as bishop of Sendai .
