The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nagasaki ( Latin Archidioecesis Nagasakiensis , Jap. カトリック長崎大司教区, katorikku Nagasaki daishikyōku ) is in Japan situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Nagasaki .

The Archdiocese of Nagasaki, together with the suffragan dioceses of Fukuoka , Kagoshima , Naha and Ōita, form the ecclesiastical province of Nagasaki, which extends over the Kyushu region including the Ryukyu Islands .

history

The Archdiocese of Nagasaki was on May 22, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of Japan as the Apostolic Vicariate of South Japan . The Apostolic Vicariate of South Japan gave up parts of its territory on March 20, 1888 to establish the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Japan . On June 15, 1891, the Vicariate Apostolic of South Japan by Leo XIII. elevated to the diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Non maius Nobis and renamed the Diocese of Nagasaki . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tokyo as a suffragan . On March 18, 1927, the Diocese of Nagasaki gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Kagoshima . Another cession took place on July 16, 1927 to establish the diocese of Fukuoka .

The Diocese of Nagasaki was on May 4, 1959 by Pope John XXIII. raised to the archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Qui cotidie .
