Joseph Asajirō Cardinal Satowaki ( Japanese ヨ ゼ フ 里 脇 浅 次郎 , Yosefu Satowaki Asajirō , born February 1, 1904 in Sotome , Japan , † August 8, 1996 in Nagasaki ) was a Japanese clergyman and archbishop of Nagasaki .

Life

Like his colleague Paul Yoshigorō Taguchi, Joseph Asajirō Satowaki comes from the Shitsu parish in what was then Sotome (incorporated into Nagasaki in 2005).

He studied in Nagasaki, Rome and Washington trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He received on 17 December 1932, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a pastor and diocesan chancellor in Nagasaki. From 1947 to 1955 he took on leadership roles as vicar general , newspaper director and lecturer.

Pope Pius XII appointed him bishop of Kagoshima in 1955 . He was ordained bishop on May 3, 1955, by Maximilien de Fürstenberg , Apostolic Internuncio in Japan; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Nagasaki, Paul Aijirô Yamaguchi , and Paul Yoshigoro Taguchi , Bishop of Osaka .

Joseph Asajirō Satowaki attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . Pope Paul VI In 1968 made him head of the Archdiocese of Nagasaki, and Pope John Paul II accepted him on June 30, 1979 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals . The titular church of Santa Maria della Pace was assigned to him. Joseph Asajirō Cardinal Satowaki died on August 8, 1996 in Nagasaki and was buried in the local Akagi Cemetery.
