Paul Yoshigorō Cardinal Taguchi ( Japanese パ ウ ロ 田 口 芳 五郎 , Pauro Taguchi Yoshigorō ; born July 20, 1902 in Sotome (today: Nagasaki ), Japan ; † February 23, 1978 in Osaka ) was Archbishop of Osaka .

Life

Paul Yoshigorō Taguchi, like his colleague Joseph Asajirō Satowaki, comes from the Shitsu parish in what was then Sotome (incorporated in Nagasaki in 2005).

He studied in Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy . He received on 22 December 1928, the sacrament of the priesthood and, after further studies in 1931 community pastor in the Archdiocese of Tokyo and a lecturer at the local seminary . From 1936 to 1940 he was the personal secretary of the Apostolic Delegate in Japan.

In 1940 Pope Pius XII appointed him . as Apostolic Administrator , in 1941 as Bishop of Osaka. He was ordained bishop on December 14, 1940 by Paolo Marella , Titular Archbishop of Doclea and Apostolic Delegate in Japan. Co- consecrators were Peter Tatsuo Doi , Archbishop of Tokyo , and Johannes Peter Franziskus Ross SJ , Titular Bishop of Tabala and Emeritus Vicar Apostolic of Hiroshima .

From 1941 to 1962, Paul Yoshigorō Taguchi also administered Shikoku Prefecture . From 1962 to 1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council . Pope Paul VI accepted him in 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Maria in Via in the college of cardinals .

Paul Yoshigorō Taguchi died on February 23, 1978 in Osaka and was buried in the local cathedral .
