The Erzbistum Osaka ( latin Archidioecesis Osakensis , Jap. カトリック大阪大司教区, katorikku Osaka daishikyōku ) is an in Japan preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Osaka .

The Archdiocese of Osaka, together with the suffragan dioceses of Hiroshima , Kyoto , Nagoya and Takamatsu, form the ecclesiastical province of Osaka, which extends over eastern Japan , with the exception of Kyushu .

history

The Archdiocese of Osaka was on March 20, 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. Established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of South Japan as the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Japan . On June 15, 1891, the Vicariate Apostolic Central Japan by Leo XIII. raised to a diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Non maius Nobis and renamed the Diocese of Osaka . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tokyo as a suffragan. The Diocese of Osaka gave up on January 27, 1904 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Shikoku . Further assignments were made on May 4, 1923 to found the Apostolic Vicariate Hiroshima and on June 17, 1937 to found the Apostolic Prefecture of Kyoto .

The Diocese of Osaka was on June 24, 1969 by Pope Paul VI. with the Apostolic Constitution Quamquam Ecclesiae raised to the archbishopric.
