Phillip Berryman

Phillip E. Berryman (* 1938 ) is a Catholic liberation theologian and author from the United States .

Life

Berryman was ordained a priest in 1963 . He worked in a parish in Pasadena, California for two years before serving as a pastor in the El Chorrillo neighborhood of Panama City from 1965 to 1973 . In 1973 he gave up the priesthood to get married. From 1976 to 1980 he served as a representative of the American Friends Service Committee for Central America and lived in Guatemala during this time . In 1980 he returned to the USA.

He published a number of books on liberation theology and Christianity in Latin America . His introductory work Liberation Theology made a significant contribution to the reception of liberation theology in the USA. Berryman has also translated a number of books by leading representatives of liberation theology for Orbis Books, the publishing house of the Maryknoll Mission Order founded by Miguel d'Escoto - including Maria Clara Bingemer , Clodovis and Leonardo Boff , José Comblin , Ivone Gebara and Franz J. Hinkelammert - into English .

Berryman is a lecturer in the Latin American Studies Program at Temple University in Philadelphia .
