Franz Josef Hinkelammert
Franz Josef Hinkelammert (* 1931 in Emsdetten ) is a German- born economist and liberation theologian who now lives in Latin America .
Life
Franz Josef Hinkelammert was born in Emsdetten in the Münsterland in 1931. He studied economics and did his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin with a fundamental thesis on the Soviet planned economy .
In the 1960s he went to Chile for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and taught at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago de Chile . When the left wing of the Christian Democratic Party of Chile joined the electoral alliance Unidad Popular , Hinkelammert became economic advisor to the new government after Salvador Allende's election victory in 1970. After the military coup in Chile in 1973 , Hinkelammert was able to save himself from arrest at the German embassy and initially returned to Germany.
In 1976 Hinkelammert returned to Latin America. Together with Pablo Richard , Hugo Assmann and others, he founded the Departamiento Ecumenico de Investigaciones in Costa Rica as an interdisciplinary research institute for liberation theology . Franz Hinkelammert lives to this day in Latin America and publishes in Spanish. He published fundamental works “on the epistemological status and method of theology, on central theological topics such as the resurrection hope in dealing with Marx's criticism of religion , on the analysis of fetishism and on biblical theological topics”. In his publications he subjected the neoliberal economy and its representatives Milton Friedman and Friedrich Hayek as well as the philosopher and scientific theorist Karl Popper to fundamental criticism.
In 2006 Franz Hinkelammert was elected in Venezuela as the first winner of the Premio Libertador (“Liberator Prize”).
