Thomas Aquino Man'yo Cardinal Maeda ( Jap. トマス·アクィナス前田万葉, Tomasu Akinasu Maeda Man'yo ; * 3. March 1949 in Tsuwasaki , Kita-Uonome (now Shin-Kamigotō ), District Minami-Matsuura , Nagasaki Prefecture , Japan ) is the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Osaka .

Life

Thomas Aquino Man'yō Maeda was ordained a priest on March 19, 1975 . He was parish pastor and editor of the diocesan bulletin in the Archdiocese of Nagasaki. From 2006 to 2011 he was general secretary of the Japanese Bishops' Conference.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Hiroshima on June 13, 2011 . The episcopal ordination donated him the emeritus Bishop of Hiroshima, Joseph Atsumi Misue , on September 23 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Leo Jun Ikenaga SJ , Archbishop of Osaka , and Joseph Mitsuaki Takami PSS , Archbishop of Nagasaki .

On August 20, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Osaka. Maeda is also Vice President of the Japanese Bishops' Conference. As a member of their episcopal commissions for education and ecumenism, he dealt in particular with work for disabled people.

In the consistory of June 28, 2018, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Pudenziana in the college of cardinals . On October 6th of the same year, the Pope appointed him a member of the Dicastery for Communications . The takeover of his titular church took place on December 16, 2018.
