The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall ( Latin Archidioecesis Ottaviensis-Cornubiensis , English Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall , French archidiocèse d'Ottawa-Cornwall ) is a in Canada situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Ottawa .
history
The Archdiocese of Ottawa was on June 25, 1847 by Pope Pius IX. built from cessions of territory by the dioceses of Kingston and Montréal as the diocese of Bytown . The diocese of Bytown was renamed on June 14, 1860 in the Diocese of Ottawa . On July 11, 1882, the Diocese of Ottawa gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Vicariate Apostolic Pontiac .
The diocese of Ottawa was on June 8, 1886 by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Ottawa gave on April 21, 1913 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Mont-Laurier . Further assignments were made on June 23, 1951 to found the diocese of Saint-Jérôme and on April 27, 1963 to found the diocese of Hull .
On May 6, 2020, Pope Francis ordered the unification of the Archdiocese with the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall and the renaming to the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall. The previous Archbishop of Ottawa, Terrence Thomas Prendergast SJ , has been named Archbishop of the Unified Archdiocese.
