Marcel André J. Gervais

Marcel André J. Gervais (born September 21, 1931 in Elie , Manitoba ) is a Canadian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ottawa .

Life

Marcel Gervais, the ninth of fourteen children in a family of tobacco farmers, was ordained a priest on May 31, 1958 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in London and titular bishop of Rossmarkaeum on April 19, 1980 . He received his episcopal ordination on June 11th of the same year by the Bishop of London, John Michael Sherlock ; Co- consecrators were Charles Aimé Halpin , Archbishop of Regina , and Aloysius Ambrozic , Auxiliary Bishop in Toronto .

He was made Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie on May 3, 1985 and instituted on June 17 of the same year. On May 13, 1989, he was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Ottawa. After retirement Joseph-Aurèle Plourdes he followed him on 27 September 1989 as Archbishop of Ottawa to. On May 14, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.
