Terrence Thomas Prendergast SJ (born February 19, 1944 in Montréal ) is a Canadian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall .

Life

Terrence Thomas Prendergast joined the congregation of the Jesuits , made his profession on August 15, 1963 and the auxiliary bishop in Toronto , Thomas Benjamin Fulton , ordained him a priest on June 10, 1972 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Toronto and titular bishop of Slebte on February 22, 1995 . The Archbishop of Toronto, Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic , ordained him episcopal on April 25 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Thomas Benjamin Fulton, former bishop of Saint Catharines , and Attila Miklósházy SJ, representative for the pastoral care of Hungary. As a motto he chose In Nomine Jesu .

He was named Archbishop of Halifax on June 30, 1998 and inducted into office on September 14 of the same year. On January 22, 2002, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Yarmouth. He was named Archbishop of Ottawa on May 14, 2007 and inducted into office on June 26 of the same year.

After he had already taken over the administration of the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall as Apostolic Administrator in January 2016 , Pope Francis united this diocese with the Archdiocese of Ottawa in persona episcopi on April 27, 2018 and appointed Prendergast as joint diocesan bishop of the united dioceses. With the full unification of the Archdiocese of Ottawa and the Diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall on May 6, 2020, he was appointed Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall by Pope Francis. The inauguration took place on March 15 of the same year.
