history
The diocese of Sault Sainte Marie was established on September 16, 1904 by Pope Pius X. from cessions of territory of the Diocese of Peterborough and the Archdiocese of Kingston as a suffragan . On April 29, 1972, the Diocese of Sault Sainte Marie gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Diocese of Fort William .
