Aloysius Matthew Cardinal Ambrozic (* as Alojzij Ambrožič on January 27, 1930 in Gabrje , Dobrova-Polhov Gradec parish , Slovenia ; † August 26, 2011 in Toronto ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto .

Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic was born in 1930 in Slovenia as Alojzij Ambrožič . The family fled to Austria in May 1945 . He attended high school in Ljubljana , in the refugee camps in Vetrinj (Viktring near Klagenfurt), Peggez (near Lienz) and Spittal an der Drau, where he graduated before his family emigrated to Canada in 1948.

As a seminarian at the Capranica College he studied Catholic theology and philosophy and received on 4 June 1955, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked in the parish pastoral care and continued his theological studies at the Angelicum in Rome. From 1960 to 1967 he worked as a lecturer in the subject of exegesis of the New Testament at St. Augustine's Seminary, the diocesan seminary in Toronto. In 1967 he was with a thesis on the evangelist St. Mark's at the Theological Faculty of the University of Würzburg doctorate . From 1970 to 1976 he taught exegesis at the Toronto School of Theology (TST) and was also dean of St. Augustine's Seminary.

Pope Paul VI appointed Aloysius Ambrozic on March 26, 1976 titular bishop of Valabria and auxiliary bishop in Toronto. He was ordained episcopal on May 27th of the same year by the Archbishop of Toronto, Philip Francis Pocock . Co-consecrators were Francis Valentine Allen , Auxiliary Bishop in Toronto, and the Prelate of Itacoatiara , Francis Paul McHugh SFM .

On 22 May 1986 Pope appointed him John Paul II. To Koadjutorerzbischof of Toronto. With the resignation of Cardinal Gerald Emmett Carter on May 17, 1990, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Toronto. Pope John Paul II accepted him on February 21, 1998 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the college of cardinals . As a cardinal he took part in the 2005 conclave , which Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger received as Pope Benedict XVI. chose.

On December 16, 2006, Benedict XVI. submitted his resignation due to reasons of age and appointed Archbishop Thomas Collins as his successor.
