Philip Francis Pocock

Philip Francis Pocock (born July 2, 1906 in St. Thomas , Ontario , Canada ; † September 6, 1984 ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto .

Life

Philip Francis Pocock studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at St. Peter's Seminary in London , Ontario. He received on 14 June 1930, the sacrament of Holy Orders . 1934 Pocock at was the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome in the subject canon law doctorate . He then taught canon law and moral theology at St. Peter's Seminary in London, Ontario.

On April 7, 1944, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Saskatoon . The Apostolic Delegate in Canada, Archbishop Ildebrando Antoniutti , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of London , John Thomas Kidd , and the Bishop of Sault Sainte Marie , Ralph Hubert Dignan .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on August 6, 1951 titular Archbishop of Aprus and Coadjutor Archbishop of Winnipeg . On January 14, 1952, Philip Francis Pocock became Archbishop of Winnipeg, succeeding the resigned Arthur Alfred Sinnott . Pope John XXIII appointed him on February 18, 1961 to coadjutor archbishop of Toronto and titular archbishop of Isauropolis . On March 30, 1971, Pocock became Archbishop of Toronto, succeeding the resigned Cardinal James Charles McGuigan .

Pope Paul VI accepted on April 27, 1978 the resignation put forward by Philip Francis Pocock.

Pocock attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .
