James Charles Cardinal McGuigan (born November 26, 1894 in Hunter River , Canada , † April 6, 1974 in Toronto ) was Archbishop of Toronto .

Life

James Charles McGuigan studied in Charlottetown , Quebec City and Washington , received his doctorate in 1918 for a doctor of theology and received in the same year, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as secretary to the Bishop of Charlottetown and lecturer at Saint Dunstan's University. From 1920 to 1922 he was secretary to the Archbishop of Edmonton , from 1923 to 1930 Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Edmonton. In 1927 he was appointed Apostolic Protonotary , and from 1927 he headed Saint Joseph's Seminary as Rector. In addition, he worked as a pastor in various parishes in the diocese.

On January 30, 1930, Pope Pius XI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Regina . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Edmonton, Henry Joseph O'Leary , on May 15 of the same year, co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Saint-Boniface , Arthur Béliveau , and the Bishop of Calgary , John Thomas Kidd . The inauguration in the Archdiocese of Regina took place six days later.

On December 22, 1934, he was appointed Archbishop of Toronto. Pope Pius XII took James Charles McGuigan in the consistory on February 18, 1946 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo in the college of cardinals . This made him the first English-speaking cardinal in Canada.

McGuigan took part in the conclaves of 1958 and 1963 in part. As a council father , he participated in the first three sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI accepted his retirement on March 30, 1971 for reasons of age. James Charles McGuigan died on April 6, 1974 in Toronto and was buried in the crypt of St. Augustine's Seminary.
