Olivier Elzéar Mathieu , CMG (born December 24, 1853 in Saint-Roch , Québec , Canada , † October 26, 1929 ) was a Canadian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Regina .

Life

Olivier Elzéar Mathieu studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Quebec . In 1878 he was at the University of Laval for a doctor of theology doctorate . Mathieu received on 2 June 1878 by the Archbishop of Quebec , Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

He then taught philosophy at Laval University until he was sent to Italy in 1882 , where he received his doctorate in philosophy. From 1899 to 1908 Olivier Elzéar Mathieu was rector of Laval University. In October 1901 Mathieu became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George . He later became a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

On July 21, 1911, Pope Pius X appointed him the first Bishop of Regina. The Archbishop of Québec, Louis-Nazaire Bégin , donated him episcopal ordination on November 5 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Montréal , Paul Bruchési , and the Archbishop of Saint-Boniface , Louis-Philippe-Adélard Langevin OMI .

Olivier Elzéar Mathieu became the first Archbishop of Regina on December 9, 1915 as a result of the elevation of the Diocese of Regina to the Archdiocese .
