Santi Marcellino e Pietro al Laterano is a Roman Catholic parish and titular church in Rome on the Via Merulana. It is dedicated to the two Roman martyrs , Saints Peter and Marcellinus , whose relics have been there since 1256.
history
The first church on this site was built by Pope Siricius in the 4th century near the catacomb of Saints Marcellinus and Peter on Via Labicana . A hospice was built right next to it, which developed into a center for pilgrims. In the 8th century it was by Pope Gregory III. restored and station church for the Saturday of the second week of Lent. In the 9th century the remains of St. Marcellinus and St. Peter were probably from the catacombs of Seligenstadt in Hessen transferred . When the church was rebuilt by Pope Alexander IV in 1256 , the relics were brought back. The hospice and the church were given to a brotherhood in 1276, who recommended themselves to the Savior.
In 1707 the complex was founded by Pope Clement XI. handed over to the Maronites , who had a monastery there for about half a century. During this time the church fell into disrepair and rebuilding became necessary. In 1753 the monks left the monastery and settled near the church of Sant'Antonio Abate dei Maroniti .
The current church is the result of the reconstruction in 1751 by Pope Benedict XIV.
Until 1906 the church was used by the Discalced Carmelites . The parish church has been looked after by secular clergy since 1911.
layout
Under the high altar is an urn with the bones of Saint Marcia. The left side altar is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin with a copy of the Virgin in Glory painted by Guido Reni with angels, Saint Joseph and Saint Rita . Next to it is a Chapel of Reconciliation.
The cube-shaped exterior is divided by the strip of pilasters in neoclassical style . It also contains late baroque elements such as the dome, the architecture of which was influenced by Francesco Borromini . The facade was designed by Girolamo Theodoli and the main altar, which shows the devotion of the martyrs, by Gaetano Lapis .
The church has the plan of a Greek cross.
