Dominik Cardinal Duka OP (born April 26, 1943 in Königgrätz ) is a Roman Catholic religious , Archbishop of Prague and Primate of Bohemia.

Life

Jaroslav Duka attended high school in his hometown. Since he was not allowed to study after graduating from high school , he worked as a factory worker and learned the metalworking trade. After completing his military service, the state authorities allowed him to study theology at the theological college in Leitmeritz from 1965 . In January 1968, he was secretly as a novice in the Dominican Order received, took the religious name of Dominik and received on 22 June 1970 through a Leitmeritzer Bishop Stepan Trochta the ordination of his order. He then worked as a pastor in the northern border area of ​​the Archdiocese of Prague . This activity was forbidden in 1975 by the Czechoslovak authorities. After continuing to work for the Dominican Order over the next few years, he was sentenced to prison in 1981. After his release he worked as a draftsman in Pilsen until 1989 . From 1986 he was Provincial of the Bohemian-Moravian Province of the Dominicans. After the political change in 1990 he also became a lecturer at the theological faculty of the Palacký University in Olomouc and chairman of the Conference of Major Religious.

After Bishop Karel Otčenášek from Königgrätz resigned from the office of bishop for reasons of age, Pope John Paul II appointed Dominik Duka as his successor on June 6, 1998. The episcopal ordination received his bishop Otčenášek on 26 September of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Prague Archbishop Miloslav Cardinal Vlk and the Apostolic Nuncio in the Czech Republic, Archbishop Giovanni Coppa . From November 2004 to January 2008 and during the following period of the Sedis vacancy , Duka was also Apostolic Administrator in the diocese of Leitmeritz .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Prague on February 13, 2010. The enthronement took place on April 10, 2010. In the same year Duka became chairman of the Czech Bishops' Conference . He held this office for two terms until April 2020.

Cardinal Duka has been a member of the Legion of Honor since 2012 .

In August 2016, Cardinal Duka warned against the "unreasonable" admission of refugees and the trivialization of Islamist terrorist attacks. However, his position is not shared by all Czech Catholics. The weekly newspaper of the Czech Bishops' Conference declined to print Duka's declaration.

Pope Francis appointed him envoy on April 21, 2018 for the celebrations of the 1050th anniversary of the establishment of the Archdiocese of Poznan , the first Polish diocese, which will take place from June 22nd to 24th, 2018.

Dominik Duka is committed to the Order of Malta and was honored on June 27, 2011 with the title of Honorary and Conventual Chaplain of the Order. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit Propiis Meritis .

Duka is a member of the Lazarus Order and its general chaplain. On September 14, 2012, he was appointed as the successor to Cardinal László Paskai OFM as the spiritual protector of the order.
