Karl Borromäus Hanl Freiherr von Kirchtreu (Czech: Karel Boromejský Hanl z Kirchtreu ; born September 4, 1782 in Körbitz ; †  1874 ) was Bishop of Königgrätz .

Career

Karl Hanl attended the Komotau grammar school and then studied philosophy and theology at the Charles University in Prague . He was ordained a priest on September 8, 1805 and then worked as a chaplain in the parishes of Kralupp , Warta , Priesen and as a pastor in Brunnersdorf . In 1822 he became a canon of the Prague Cathedral Chapter . Two years later, Archbishop Wenzel Leopold Chlumčanský of Přestavlk appointed him to the Prague Consistorial Council and Emperor Franz II. To the Real Gubernial Council and Spiritual Advisor for the Kingdom of Bohemia.

Bishop of Königgrätz

Following the appointment of the Hradec Kralove Bishop Alois Josef Krakovský Kolowrat to Prague Archbishop Karl Hanl was nominated as his successor and on 10 June 1832 the Prague archbishop in the All Saints Chapel consecrated .

During his tenure, the Borromeo Boys' College was founded in Königgrätz. In addition to his pastoral duties, he also promoted road building and fruit tree cultivation in his district.

In 1836 he assisted in the coronation of Emperor Ferdinand I as King of Bohemia. Shortly afterwards the Emperor appointed him a Real Privy Councilor . The University of Prague awarded him a doctorate in theology in 1848. In 1861 he received from Emperor Franz Joseph I , the Grand Cross of the Franz Joseph Order . In 1872 the emperor elevated him to the status of Austrian baron with the title 'Freiherr von Kirchtreu'.
