Hermann Hannibal von Blümegen (Czech: Heřman Hannibal Blümegen ; born June 1, 1716 in Vienna , † October 20, 1774 in Brno ) was Bishop of Königgrätz .

Origin and career

His parents were Hermann Jodok von Blümegen, privy councilor and chancellor of the prince abbot von Kempten , imperial councilor from 1720, and Isabella Genofeva, née. from Deuring. The family belonged to the Lower Austrian gentry since 1722 and to the Bohemian baron since 1723 .

Hermann Hannibal von Blümegen studied at the Sapienza in Rome, where he received the academic degree of Dr. iur. utr. acquired. Even before he was ordained a priest on September 23, 1742, he became Canon of Olomouc in 1738 . In 1750 he was promoted to dean of the cathedral and a year later became provost of St. Peter and Paul in Brno. In 1771 he built a castle in Wisowitz , which had belonged to him since 1746.

Bishop of Königgrätz

After the Bishop of Königgrätzer Anton Peter Příchovský von Přichowitz had been raised to Archbishop of Prague , Empress Maria Theresa nominated Hermann Hannibal Blümegen as his successor in her capacity as Queen of Bohemia on November 5, 1763. According to the papal confirmation of April 9, 1764, on May 27, d. J. the episcopal ordination by the Olomouc bishop Maximilian von Hamilton and on August 15th d. J. the enthronement in Königgrätz .

During his tenure, he turned to pastoral care. In 1765, twenty new parishes were established in the district and faith missions were carried out with funds made available by the Propaganda Congregation for missionaries. Due to personal decisions, however, Blümegen soon got into disputes with the cathedral chapter , which led to his retiring to his Brno provost after a stroke and administering the diocese from there. In 1767 he appointed the dean of the Brno chapter and later first bishop of Brno, Matthias Franz Chorinský von Ledska, as auxiliary bishop and his deputy and in 1771 as his coadjutor .

From Brno, Blümegen continued to perform his bishopric duties. In 1767 he prescribed eight-day retreats for the clergy . Since his district also included areas with a predominantly German population, he decreed in 1771 that sermons must be given in the respective mother tongue of the believers. In the same year he made John of Nepomuk the diocesan patron and his name day a public holiday. In 1773 he issued regulations for the economic equipment of the priestly house, for which he took over annual payment obligations in 1774. In the same year that was the year of his death, he addressed his clergy with guidelines on the priestly lifestyle . His body was buried in the Brno diocese Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul .
