On September 27, 1719 he was ordained a priest and canon in Olomouc and provost of the All Saints Monastery at Prague Castle . Bishop of Königgrätz

After the death of Königgrätzer Bishop Moritz Adolf von Sachsen-Zeitz , Emperor Karl VI nominated. Johann Joseph Wratislaw von Mitrowitz on July 6, 1733 as his successor. The papal confirmation followed on December 18 th. J., the enthronement on June 6, 1734.

During his tenure, he tried to establish more parishes and restricted the rights of church patrons. He issued regulations on the clothing of priests and the cathedral chapter and, in 1735, caused missions to be held by the Jesuits. From Pope Clement XII. the bishop's cathedral received the relics of the diocesan saint Clement in 1737 .

The development of the diocese was hampered by the Prussian occupation in the First Silesian War in 1741 and in the Second Silesian War in 1744. To finance the diocese, Johann Joseph was able to acquire the Zajezdez estate in 1747 and the Raubowitz estate in 1750. In Chlum, which was also diocesan property, he built a castle.

After his death at Chrast Castle, he was buried in the bishop's crypt in his cathedral.
