Moritz Adolf Karl von Sachsen-Zeitz , (born December 1, 1702 in the gatehouse of Moritzburg Castle , Zeitz ; † June 20, 1759 in Pöltenberg near Znaim ) was titular archbishop and bishop of Königgrätz and bishop of Leitmeritz , canon in Cologne and since 1713 duke from Sachsen-Zeitz to Pegau and Neustadt .

Career

His parents were Duke Friedrich Heinrich von Sachsen-Zeitz and Anna Friederike Philippine von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg .

The Saxon prince, who converted to Catholicism in 1716, received through the activities of his uncle Christian August von Sachsen-Zeitz in 1722 the benefice as provost of the Abbey of Altötting , which Clemens August von Bayern gave him as a reward for his uncle's vote in the bishopric election, and in 1719 a prebender at Cologne Cathedral. However, from a young age his uncle saw him as incompetent, lazy, cowardly, ignorant and incredibly bigoted .

After ordination as a priest in 1725, he was named titular bishop of Pharsalus on February 8, 1730 . Protected by the House of Habsburg , he was transferred to Leitmeritz as Bishop of Königgrätz in 1731 and as Bishop in 1733.

In 1741 he refused the Bohemian rival king Charles III. the homage. As a result, Bishop Moritz Adolf Karl was able to secure the support of the Viennese court despite his little episcopal administration. Its waste led to the diocese's bankruptcy in 1746. During the imperial sequestration and the public disputes over his person, the bishop moved his seat to Eichstätt . There the bishop contemplated resignation in 1752. However, he then returned to Leitmeritz, as he was still in the special imperial favor. With the outbreak of the Seven Years' War , the bishop fled Leitmeritz in 1756 and was placed under the supervision of the provost of Pöltenberg by the imperial court. He spent the last years of his life in Pöltenberg.
