Jaroslaw Ignaz von Sternberg (also: Jaroslaw Ignaz Reichsgraf von Sterberg ; Czech: Jaroslav Ignác Šternberk ; born May 23, 1641 in Prague ; † April 12, 1709 ) was Bishop of Leitmeritz .

Life

His parents were Wenzel Georg Graf von Sternberg , imperial councilor and state judge, and Ursula Polyxena, née. from Martinitz . Jaroslaw had been canon in Passau from 1662 and studied theology in Prague and Rome. His ordination was probably in 1668.

After the death of the first Leitmeritz bishop Maximilian Rudolf von Schleinitz , Emperor Leopold I nominated Jaroslaw Ignaz Sternberg as his successor on October 30, 1675. The papal approval of June 22nd, 1676 followed on September 13th. J. the enthronement.

In addition to his episcopal duties, Jaroslaw Ignaz von Sternberg promoted the holding of popular missions . With the intended restriction of the patronage rights, which also included the filling of the priestly and chaplain positions, he could not get his way. He had to withdraw the interdict imposed on the episcopal city in this connection on orders from the sovereign.

During his term of office there was a lot of building activity, for which the builder Giulio Broggio and later his son Octavio Broggio were appointed diocesan builders . In addition to the renovation and construction of numerous churches, the episcopal residence was also built in 1689–1701. The cathedral construction begun under Sternberg's predecessor was completed and inaugurated in 1781. Sternberg was buried in it after his death.
