The diocese of Leitmeritz ( Latin Dioecesis Litomericensis , Czech Biskupství litoměřické or Diecéze litoměřická ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Northern Bohemia with its seat in Leitmeritz . It was canonically built in 1655 and as a suffragan diocese, it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Prague .

history

In Leitmeritz there was a collegiate chapter at St. Stephen's Church from 1057 . Although the chapter suffered substantial losses in its possessions over the centuries, it formed the material basis for the new diocese, which arose as part of the Counter-Reformation after the Thirty Years War . Emperor Ferdinand III. nominated the provost of the monastery, Maximilian Rudolf von Schleinitz , as first bishop in 1647 . Due to the lengthy negotiations about the financial resources, the canonical foundation took effect on July 3, 1655.

The right of nomination for the diocese remained with the King of Bohemia , who by then already had one for the provost. The cathedral chapter was at its construction of a Cathedral Dean and Canons . Four more canons were established in 1671, 1680 and 1717.

The diocese emerged from areas that were taken out of the Archdiocese of Prague. When it was built , it comprised a small area between Bilin , Bohemian Leipa and Rumburg , as well as small enclaves in the Saxon Upper Lusatia (e.g. Schirgiswalde ). This included the Leitmeritz circle , which in 1647 was divided into two vicariates with 62 parishes , but which had already increased to six by 1670. In 1784 the diocese was expanded to include Jungbunzlau and Saaz districts .

The first bishop Maximilian Rudolf von Schleinitz built a baroque cathedral in place of the old collegiate church with diocese funds and the use of his private assets . In 1738 a seminary was founded.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the diocese was badly affected by the nationality dispute between Czechs and Germans, as both ethnic groups had about the same proportion of the diocesan population.

In 1948 the diocese had 449 parishes with 268 diocesan priests , 83 religious priests , 180 friars and 637 religious sisters .

The diocese of Leitmeritz maintains a diocesan partnership with the diocese of Eichstätt in Bavaria.
