Diocese coat of arms

The diocese was established on May 31, 1993 by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Pro supremi Ecclesiae Pastoris and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Prague as a suffragan diocese.

In addition to the predominantly archiepiscopal Prague territories in western Bohemia and the Egerland , 89 parishes with around 155,000 inhabitants came from the diocese of Budweis to the newly founded diocese of Pilsen. It was the Vicariate Domažlice and parts of the area of the Vicariate Klatovy and Nepomuk. Parishes in the west of the Leitmeritz diocese were also given to Pilsen. In spring 2010 the diocese included the vicariates Domažlice , Cheb , Karlsbad , Klatovy , Pilsen-Stadt, Pilsen-Süd, Pilsen-Nord, Rokycany , Sokolov and Tachov .

The first incumbent was Bishop František Radkovský until 2016 . Tomáš Holub succeeds him .
