biography

Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein came from the Arnau line of Count Waldstein . As an alumne at the Collegium Germanicum , he studied in Rome from 1735 to 1741, where he obtained the academic degree of Dr. phil. et theol. and was ordained a priest in 1740 by Pope Benedict XIV . After his return he was initially active in pastoral care and in 1743 became provost and archbishop vicar in Neuhaus . In 1745 he received a canonical in Altbunzlau , where he was later given the deanery and in 1757 the provost's office. In 1746 he became canon in Prague and worked as a Czech preacher. In 1748 he received the deanery at the Prague collegiate monastery St. Appolinaris , which he had restored.

In 1756 Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein was appointed titular bishop of Amyclae and auxiliary bishop in Prague . The Prague archbishop Johann Moritz Gustav von Manderscheid-Blankenheim appointed him his vicar general .

Bishop of Leitmeritz

After the death of the Leitmeritz bishop Moritz Adolf von Sachsen-Zeitz , the Bohemian Queen Maria Theresa nominated Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein as his successor on July 19, 1759. After the papal confirmation of January 28, 1760, the move into the cathedral took place on March 19, 1760.

Emmanuel Ernst von Waldstein was influenced by late Jansenism and distinguished himself as a good pastor. He valued well-trained preachers and tolerance among his clergy. Although he showed understanding for the state general seminaries, he established a diocesan seminary in 1762. In the course of the Josephine reforms , his diocese was significantly enlarged in 1784.

During his tenure, he had an episcopal summer palace built in Třebautitz ( Třeboutice ) and the garden of his residence was redesigned. He promoted the historical sciences, set up a private library, put on a numismatic collection and planned a state museum. Probably because of his attachment to his diocese, he refused in 1777 to become coadjutor of the archbishop in Lemberg, Galicia, with the right of succession.

After his death he was buried in the cemetery at the Leitmeritzer St. John's Church. His library and archive are located in the “Waldstein Estate” in the Leitmeritz State Archives.
