Bishop Josef Koukl

Josef Koukl (* 8. November 1926 in Brno , † 22. May 2010 in Leitmeritz ) was from 1989 to 2003 Bishop of Litomerice ( Litoměřice ).

Josef Koukl spent his youth in Břeclav , where his father was a high school professor . After graduating from high school in Brno in 1945, he studied Catholic theology at the Theological Faculty in Prague until 1950 , where he was ordained a priest on April 23, 1950 . After working as a chaplain in Sokolov , he did alternative military service (PTP) until 1953 and then worked as an assistant chaplain in various parishes, including at St. Vitus Cathedral . From 1958 he was pastor in Kladruby u Stříbra and in 1970 he was appointed spiritual director of the Leitmeritz seminary . In 1974 he was awarded a Dr. theol. doctorate and was appointed professor of moral theology at the Leitmeritz Theological Faculty. He also became a canon of the All Saints Chapter at Prague Castle .

Pope John Paul II appointed Josef Koukl Bishop of Leitmeritz in 1989. The Archbishop of Prague, Cardinal František Tomášek , donated him his episcopal ordination on August 27, 1989 in St. Stephen's Cathedral . Co- consecrators were the then Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, Archbishop Francesco Colasuonno , and the auxiliary bishop in Prague, Jan Lebeda . His motto was “ Deus caritas est ”.

On December 24, 2003, Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation. Until the end of February 2004, Koukl managed the diocese as an administrator. After his inauguration, he was appointed Episcopal Promoter for the Czech Bishops' Conference in contact with foreign affairs, including in the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People . He was dean and knight of honor of the Saint George Knights Brotherhood in Carinthia .

Josef Koukl was buried on May 29, 2010 in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Leitmeritz.

Act

In 2005, the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft awarded him the European Charlemagne Prize for his services to the understanding between Germans and Czechs .

The Ackermann parish of the Würzburg diocese honored Josef Koukl on January 13, 2007 with the “Nepomuk Medal” for his extraordinary services in building a reconciled, future-oriented and peacemaking neighborhood between Czechs and Germans.

In 2009 he was honored with the "Ulrich-von-Eschenbach-Plakette", the highest award of the home district association Leitmeritz, for his services to expellees and reconciliation.
