Wenzel Leopold Prince Chlumčanský Knight of Přestavlk and Chlumetz ; Czech : Václav Leopold Chlumčanský z Přestavlk a Chlumčan ; (* November 15, 1749 in Hostitz Castle , South Bohemia ; † June 14, 1830 in Prague ) was Bishop of Leitmeritz and Archbishop of Prague .

Career

Wenzel Leopold Chlumčanský was a son of Anton Chlumčanský of Přestavlk. After attending the grammar schools in Deutsch Brod and Prague, Chlumčanský studied philology in Prague from 1765 as an alumne of the St. Wenceslas Seminary and the Bartholomäus Konviktes , which he obtained in 1768 with the degree of Dr. phil., and theology, which he completed in 1771 with the theological baccalaureate . After his ordination he worked for several years as a chaplain and pastor in various places. In 1779 he was accepted into the Prague cathedral chapter and worked as a German preacher at St. Vitus Cathedral . In 1784 he bought his father's estate Hostitz from his brother Adalbert . He was later appointed archdeacon and on June 1, 1795 titular bishop of Canea and auxiliary bishop in Prague. The episcopal ordination donated to him on September 28, 1795 Archbishop Wilhelm Florentin von Salm-Salm . In 1796 he appointed him vicar general . In 1799 he sold the Hostitz estate to Joachim Zadubský von Schönthal.

Bishop of Leitmeritz

After the death of the Leitmeritz bishop Ferdinand Kindermann von Schulstein , Emperor Franz I nominated Wenzel Leopold Chlumčanský von Přestavlk as his successor. The papal confirmation of March 29, 1802 followed on June 30th. J. the inauguration. He was a primate of the Kingdom of Bohemia .

The Napoleonic Wars , which left a lot of misery and destruction, fell during his term of office in Leitmeritz . The seminary , which opened in 1804, was housed in the former Jesuit college in 1810.

For his services, the emperor appointed him a secret council and intended to raise him to archbishop of Lviv , but Chlumčanský refused with reference to language difficulties.

Archbishop of Prague

After the death of the Prague archbishop Wilhelm Florentin von Salm-Salm , the emperor nominated Chlumčanský as his successor on December 30, 1814. The papal confirmation followed on March 15, 1815, the enthronement on May 15 d. J.

As Archbishop of Prague, caring for the poor and needy was a matter of concern to him. He established a foundation to promote the next generation of priests and issued new regulations for the seminary. He understood and supported the goals of the Czech national rebirth .

Chlumčanský's tenure was overshadowed for several years by the events surrounding the religious philosopher Bernard Bolzano , against whom an indictment was brought on the instructions of the emperor and the curia and who finally had to be dismissed as a university professor.
