biography

He came from a noble family from Krumau in southern Bohemia and was the son of the university professor and consortium chancellor Joseph Ritter von Bretfeld zu Cronenburg (1729-1820) and Maria Anna Chlumczansky von Przestawlk and Chlumczan (1753-1819). His uncle Wenzel Leopold Ritter Chlumczansky von Przestawlk and Chlumczan became Archbishop of Prague and Primate of the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1814 . His other uncle, the unmarried kuk chamberlain and lieutenant colonel Adalbert Ritter Chlumczansky von Prestawlk and Chlumczan († 1833) became his adoptive father , which is why Bretfeld was granted his name association with "Bretfeld-Chlumczansky" on May 11, 1833 in Vienna .

Bretfeld was a knight of the Catholic Order of Malta and treasurer of the Austro-Hungarian Star Cross . He was kuk chamberlain and real state chancellery , professor and rector (1822) of the University of Vienna . In addition, Bretfeld was landlord on Weseliczko and Klein-Zbieschitz and from 1830 also on Swatkowitz.

Bretfeld-Chlumczansky resided at Weseliczko Castle in the summer months and led a dissolute life there. Musicians played in the castle every day and on the Veselský rybník pond he let painted boats go with singing young people. Bretfeld-Chlumczansky organized numerous amusements for himself and his subjects. He particularly enjoyed throwing coins among the children. His property was placed on February 28, 1838 under the curate of his nephews Prokop Graf Lažanský and Josef Kreil. At that time he had a fortune of 56,336 guilders, including the only real estate Weseliczko (36,000 guilders) and Swatkowitz (14,541 guilders), the amount of his debts amounted to 9,292 guilders.

He was a committed collector of art, books and coins and left behind an extensive coin collection, the list of which was published after his death ( list of coins and medals collection from the estate of Franz Joseph Freyherrn von Bretfeld-Chlumczansky , Vienna 1841–1842).

Bretfeld-Chlumczansky was an honorary member of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Royal British “Society for Classical Studies” in London .

Since Franz Joseph von Bretfeld-Chlumczansky had no descendants in 1839, the inheritance fell to his nephews and nieces Emanuel, Antonín and Josefine, who lived in Vienna and who were under the tutelage of Count Prokop Lažanský and Václav Ritter Bohuš. The two Bohemian estates were managed by Josef Kreil, who sold them to Johann Nepomuk Nádherný in 1843 .
