Augustin II Pavel Vahala. (Also: Augustin Paul Wahala * 23. January 1802 in Palačov in Stary Jicin in Nový Jičín ; † 10. September 1877 ) was Bishop of Litomerice ( Litoměřice ).

Career

After studying theology in Olomouc, Augustin Pavel Vahala was accepted into the Vienna Konvikt , which only the most talented candidates for priesthood from the entire Habsburg monarchy were allowed to attend. On September 22, 1827 he was ordained a priest in Vienna and then appointed as a chaplain in Hranice . After the Archbishop of Olomouc had appointed him his secretary and ceremonial , he was also appointed consistorial councilor and honorary canon there. In 1842 he became a pastor in Mohelnice , where he soon rose to the position of dean and archpriest and was given responsibility for the school supervision of the Mohelnice district.

Bishop of Leitmeritz

After the death of the Leitmeritz bishop Augustin I Bartolomäus Hille , Emperor Franz Josef I nominated Augustin Pavel Vahala as his successor on September 16, 1865. The papal confirmation of January 8, 1866, followed on April 8, 1866 in the Olomouc Cathedral, the episcopal ordination and on April 15, the assumption of office in Leitmeritz. On the same day he set up a foundation to set up an institution for the deaf and dumb.

His term of office was overshadowed by the outbreak of the German war and its consequences. 1869-1870 he took part in the First Vatican Council , on which u. a. the Pope's infallibility became a dogma . In protest, numerous believers and priests converted to Old Catholicism in the diocese of Leitmeritz . The parish of Warnsdorf was particularly affected .

Augustin Pavel Vahala died in his bishop's residence and was buried in the bishop's vault in the Leitmeritz cemetery.
