Alois Joseph Schrenck von Notzing (also: Josef Schrenck Freiherr von Notzing ; Czech: Alois Josef svobodný pán Schrenk , also Alois Josef Schrenk ; born March 25, 1802 in Zbenice , † March 5, 1849 in Prague ) was auxiliary bishop in Olomouc and archbishop of Prague and Chancellor of Charles University .

Life

Alois Joseph Schrenck von Notzing came from the Bavarian aristocratic family of the Schrenck von Notzing . His parents were the Imperial and Royal Major Franz Seraph Schrenck von Notzing and Theresia Cajetana, née Freiin Aßfeld von Wydrzi ( Asfeld z Vydří ). From 1821 Alois Joseph studied theology at the episcopal seminary in Königgrätz , where he earned the benevolence of Bishop Alois Josef Krakovský von Kolowrat . On his recommendation, he received a canon position at the Olomouc cathedral chapter in 1823 . After priestly ordination on 22 August 1825, he first worked in pastoral care in the diocese of Olomouc. From there he came to the higher education institution in Vienna and soon afterwards received a pastor's position in Gmünd in the diocese of St. Pölten . As early as 1829 he was appointed consistorial councilor and dean of Weitra by the local bishop Jakob Frint . In 1832 he became pastor of Mödritz near Brno, and in 1834 he received his doctorate in theology . As a resident canon at the Olomouc Chapter, he was director of philosophical studies in Moravia from 1835 and provost of the parish church of St. Mauritz . In 1837 the Archbishop of Olomouc Maximilian Joseph Gottfried von Sommerau Beeckh appointed him Archpriest and Dean of the Olomouc Archipresbyterate.

On February 12, 1838, Schrenck von Notzing was appointed auxiliary bishop in Olomouc and appointed titular bishop of Ptolomais . The episcopal ordination took place on March 25, 1838.

After the death of Prague Archbishop Andreas Alois Ankwicz von Skarbek-Poslawice , Alois Joseph Schrenk von Notzing was nominated as his successor on June 20, 1838. The papal confirmation of September 17, 1838 was followed by the enthronement on November 4, 1838. During his tenure, the Prague Motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo founded several religious brotherhoods. He promoted ecclesiastical art and the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral . For this purpose the canon Václav Michal Pešina founded a cathedral building association. In 1845 the "Missale bohemicum" was published. When the Prague Jews were persecuted in the revolutionary year of 1848, Archbishop Schrenck von Notzing wrote a pastoral letter to the people of Prague calling for them to apply the main commandment of charity regardless of belief.
