The TranzAlpine is a long-distance passenger train service between Christchurch and Greymouth on the South Island of New Zealand . The name comes from the route of the train that crosses the New Zealand Alps on its journey .

Routing

The train has been in service since November 22, 1987 and replaced the previous express trains between Christchurch and Greymouth. He mainly uses the " Midland Line " railway line. The train connection is mainly important for tourism because of the interesting landscape . The length of the route is 223 km. On this route, 5 viaducts (including the staircase viaduct with a height of 73 m) are crossed and 16 tunnels are passed through. The longest tunnel is the Otira tunnel under the 920 m high Arthur's Pass with a length of 8550 m.

The connection has been operated since October 1, 2008 by the Kiwi Rail Scenic Journeys division of KiwiRail , a state railway . The train starts in Christchurch in the morning and takes 4.5 hours to get there.
