Moana is a village in the Gray District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The Lake Brunner on which the village is located is from the Māori Moana called. The name is an abbreviation of the name Moana Kotuku , which means "lake of the white heron".

geography

The village is around 24 km southeast of Greymouth in Malloy Bay on the north shore of Lake Brunner . Just west of the village is the outflow from the lake into the Arnold River .

population

In the 2013 census, the town had 270 inhabitants, 3.4% more than in the 2006 census.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

Around 22 km by road to the north-west, Moana is connected to the New Zealand State Highway 7 , which gives the village access to the next larger town of Greymouth on the west coast.

Rail transport

Between the village and the shores of Lake Brunner , the Midland Line runs from Christchurch to Greymouth . The TranzAlpine tourist train stops here twice a day, once on the outward journey and once on the return journey; the route is also used for freight traffic.

Education

The Lake Brunner School is a coeducational primary school for grades 1 to 8 with a Decile rating of 7 and 45 students in 2015. A second school, the Rotomanu School , closed in 2005 and merged with the Lake Brunner School .
