The Gray District is an administrative unit in the West Coast region in New Zealand . The district council, called the Gray District Council , is based in the city of Greymouth , as is the district administration.

Geographical location

The Gray District is the middle and smallest district in the West Coast region . It has a pure land area of ​​3475 km² and had at the census in 2013 with 13,371 inhabitants a population density of 3.8 inhabitants per km².

The western border of the district forms the coastline to the Tasman Sea . It is bordered to the south by the Westland District and to the northeast by the Buller District . When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 92.6% said they were European, 9.3% said they had Māori roots, 1.1% came from the islands of the Pacific and 1.8% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 9.7% of the population said they were born overseas. 1.4% of the population spoke Māori as the second most common language after English, and 8.4% of the Māori did so.
