The Waikato District borders in the west and the Matamata-Piako District and the Western Bay of Plenty District , which is already part of the Bay of Plenty region , do so in the south . The eastern border forms the western part of the Bay of Plenty , via which the district then also has direct access to the Pacific Ocean . In the western part of the district lies the extensive Hauraki Plains , while the eastern part is characterized by the foothills of the Coromandel Range .
The largest cities in the district are Waihi , which has around 4500 inhabitants with its gold mine, Paeroa , where the administrative headquarters of the district is located and with almost 4000 inhabitants, is centrally located in the middle of the district, and the much smaller town of Ngatea with around 1150 inhabitants west.
climate
The climate of the eastern part of the district is characterized by a mountainous landscape, while the western part with its plain is more protected and with around 1100 mm of precipitation only collects half of the precipitation that falls in the mountainous east. In the Hauraki Plains , the summers are quite warm with mean daytime temperatures of up to 25 ° C, while the winters are relatively mild at 6 ° C.
