Paeroa is a small town in the Hauraki District of the Waikato regionon the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The city is located around 30 km south-southeast of Thames and around 15 km west of Waihi on the eastern edge of the Hauraki Plains . The two New Zealand State Highways 2 and 26 intersect in the city . The Ohinemuri River flows past the southern edge of the city and joins the Waihou River about 3 km northwest .

history

The area of the lower Waihou River was a popular settlement area for the Māori . The first European settlers came with Joshua Thorp in 1839. In 1840 a river port was built by the settlers in Paeroa . The place was at the time the furthest upstream point to which the Ohinemuri River could be navigated by ship. When gold was found in the area of the Ohinemuri River in 1875, Paeroa also emerged as a city. The city boomed in the 1890s, as new techniques such as the extraction of gold from the rocks using cyanides and the transport of heavy machinery upstream to Paeroa and from there to the gold fields of Karangahake , Waikino and Waihī promised work and income. On April 1, 1915 Paeroa was given the status of a borough .

In the 20th century, when the gold fields became unattractive for further exploitation, agriculture developed in and around Paeroa with an emphasis on milk production and processing. In 1901 the region's first butter factory was built in Paeroa . Milk powder production followed, and both industries existed until the 1980s, when concentration in the market created larger centralized factories that were no longer based in Paeroa .

population

In the 2013 census, the city had 3888 inhabitants, 2.2% less than in the 2006 census.

economy

Paeroa is the service center of the predominantly agricultural region. In addition to milk production, cattle, sheep and goat breeding are carried out here. Viticulture and horticulture also secure the income of some businesses. In Paeroa itself there are manufacturers of concrete products, some joineries and sawmills, which get their wood from the forests of the Coromandel Range and Kaimai Range to the east . In Paeroa there are also administrations of the Department of Social Welfare and the Justice Department .

Paeroa mineral spring

Paeroa is known for its mineral spring, which was discovered in 1905 and used from 1910 by the Paeroa Natural Mineral Water Company, which was founded specifically for this purpose, to produce mineral water . After a change of ownership to Gray and Menzies Limited from Auckland , the company was initially closed in 1912. Reopened in 1915 by the same owner, a new factory was built in 1926 for daily production, but Paeroa & Lemon was initially only produced in Auckland , for which the water had to be transported to Auckland in barrels .

It was not until 1934 that the production of the lemon soft drink was relocated to Paeroa . It is not known when the name was changed from Paeroa & Lemon to Lemon & Paeroa , but both versions were used in advertisements as late as 1947. After several other changes of ownership and mergers in the beverage market, the company Oasis Industries took over the springs in the late 1970s , closed the factory in Paeroa in July 1980 and took over the entire production in Auckland . Today the source and the production of Lemon & Paeroa is in the hands of the New Zealand Coca-Cola subsidiary Coca-Cola Amatil .

In memory of the time when Lemon & Paeroa was produced in Paeroa , a seven meter high and 1.3 meter diameter Lemon & Paeroa bottle made of concrete was placed at a fork in the city at Christmas 1967 . However, due to traffic problems generated, the monument was removed again in the spring of 1969 and re-erected near its current location. In 2002 the work was moved another 20 meters.

Attractions

Paeroa has the Paeroa Historical Maritime Park , in which one can get impressions from the former heyday of the city. The main attraction here is the paddle steamer "Kopu" from 1897, which once operated between Paeroa and Auckland . Another museum is the Paeroa & District Historical Society Museum , where you can learn about the history of the Māori and the history of settlements by European immigrants.

Events

In February each year, the Battle of the Streets motorcycle race and the Pipe Band Tattoo are held in Paeroa .

Sports

Paeroa has a racecourse, an 18-hole golf course and a swimming pool. In addition to hiking in the area, kayaking, climbing and fishing are possible.
